Crushed Bugs and Starbucks?

by Katy Green

Starbucks Strawberry Frappuccino
I wish I could take credit for the title but it is true and it may not be news to some but since I'm a Starbucks drinker - it was news to me so in the spirit of sharing and caring.

According to Ecorazzi and This Dish is Vegetarian, that Starbucks’ Strawberries and Creme Frappuccino was not vegan even if ordered with soy milk.

Shocking I say - that is why reading ingredients is so key!

Cochineal Extract

Its seems that the Strawberries and Creme Frapp and some other Starbucks products included a cochineal extract (including Stawberry Banana Smoothie, Raspberry Swirl Cake, Birthday Cake Pop, Mini Donut with pink icing, and Red Velvet Whoopie Pie.) the  food dye is made from crushed beetles.

The news of the crushed bugs was shared by a vegan Starbucks employee, led to public outrage over the ingredient and thousands of signatures on a petition started by This Dish Is Veg founder Daelyn Fortney.

Wow, you see how powerful one voice is and then it spreads like a virus, that is true "power of the people".

Cochineal

Quote from the This Dish is Vegetarian:
What originally began as a story to inform vegans that their Starbucks’ Strawberry Frappuccino was no longer safe to consume ended up being an issue that bothered many people. Individuals across the country and world turned their single voices into one steady roar that informed Starbucks of their displeasure. Thanks to social media and my petition on Change.org, within a matter of weeks, Starbucks has agreed to rectify the situation, showing that it is a stand-up company that cares about its consumers.”
How cool is that! For more the cochineal extract Starbucks story, click here!

Please note before you get bugged out, according to Dr. Weil - Trusted Health Advisor: "Carmine and cochineal are used to color some foods pink or red and tend to be found in juices, cherries in canned fruit cocktails, artificial crab meat, strawberry milk drinks, and some fruit-flavored yogurts."

A small number of people have allergic reactions to the insect proteins, flushing, hives, headaches, eczema, sneezing and, rarely, anaphylactic shock, which can be fatal. To avoid products containing carmine and cochineal, don't buy any pink or red foods whose ingredients include artificial coloring or added coloring.

As unappetizing as these beetle-derived food colorings may sound, they may not be as dangerous as synthetic food dyes. For more on Dr. Weil's food dye article, click here.

Earth Love Forever...Mother Earth is Watching You!

by Katy Green

Planet Love

Why can't we celebrate the Earth everyday why does it have to be one day or a week or a month?

I know I sound like a broken record but at least the call to Earth Love will bring awareness to many and hopefully make an imprint in the minds of many more.

Beautiful Earth
Earth Week usually runs from April 16th to Earth Day, April 22nd but I say the true celebration is the following week because being green is more than Kermit the Frog - it's incorporating planet love into your daily life with no muss or no fuss.

Take a moment to check out shoptobegreen 5 Daily Earth Love Activities that can be part of your daily regimen beyond Earth Week or Earth Month or Earth Hour.

Mother Earth is Watching You

5 Daily Earth Love Activities ....that don't require much thought:
  1.  Say farewell to fabric softeners in the dryer. Did you know fabric softeners contain highly toxic chemicals that latch unto sheets and clothes and can be inhaled or absorbed through your skin into your bloodstream. ALERT for allergy sufferers this is total GREEN NOT! Try adding a quarter cup of baking soda to the wash cycle to soften.
  2. Energy Saver A+ - shut off air-conditioner vents in the bedrooms during the day and use solar shades to block the sun. The solar shades will keep the hot sun rays out and your room should be cool. If you must use your air conditioner set your thermostat to 78 degrees when you are home and 85 degrees or off when you are away. According to Consumer Energy Center, using ceiling or room fans allows you to set the thermostat higher because the air movement will cool the room. Always take into account health considerations and be sure to drink plenty of fluids in warm weather. (Save: 1 - 3 percent per degree, for each degree the thermostat is set above 72 degrees). Also decreasing the temperature on your air conditioner won't cool your room any faster.
  3. Eat all your Food! - Flashback memories of your Mom telling you to eat all your vegetables - I am not joking. Food waste is a huge problem - only buy what you need and don't go food shopping when you're hungry because you will put more in your basket and and less in your wallet.  Did you know that each year a typical household discards 474 pounds of food waste - according to the University of Arizona research study.

  4. Say No to Plastic - if you shop at whole foods or organic markets you won't see plastic bags but the plastic bag saga continues at supermarkets so BYOB (bring your own bag). I don't need to tell you how harmful plastic is to the environment...you guys know better:)
  5. Run far from a Plastic Shower Curtains - I know - duh this is plastic - sometimes we disconnect  one plastic from another - the money you spend  on shower curtains is a true lifesaver for you and your loved ones. Did you know that PVC has been called the "poison plastic" due to the release of dioxins into the air and water. It is possible these toxic chemicals could contribute to cancer. Click here for more on toxic vinyl. Switch to PVC free or organic hemp or cloth.

Love is in the air whenever a wedding is near. Couples gaze at each other with pure hearts ready to start their lives on a green path.

I know it may sound a bit "Corn on the Cobb" but I can't help myself whenever I think of a wedding that is not earth friendly and I think of waste and mountains for garbage. I can't help it.
